001. GLOBAL HIRING REMAINS BELOW PRE-PANDEMIC. LinkedIn estimates global hiring is nearly 20% below pre-pandemic levels, with advanced economies down 20–35%. India (+40%) and UAE (+37%) remain exceptions. ManpowerGroup's Q4 Net Employment Outlook reached 29%, up 2 points quarter-on-quarter and 6 points year-on-year.
2. US LABOUR MARKET: LOW HIRING, LOW FIRING. The September 2026 BLS report showed just 29,000 added jobs; unemployment edged up to 4.2% from 4.1% in July. Hires rate fell to 3.2%, quits to 1.9% and layoffs to 1.0% — a “frozen” market. Indeed's CEO highlighted a vicious cycle: applications per job rose 111% from 2022 to 2025 while recruiter numbers fell 56%.
3. AI ADDS ROLES, RAISES SCREENING BURDEN. LinkedIn logged 1.3 million new AI-related roles in two years, including over 600,000 data centre jobs; AI safety roles alone grew 91% year over year. However, 66% of recruiters plan to increase AI screening and job seekers are sending 30% more applications than before the pandemic, creating a “sea of applicants” that makes qualified candidates harder to identify.
4. TECH CUTS CONTINUE AMID AI INVESTMENT. Layoffs.fyi counted 128,536 tech layoffs across 299 companies by 10 September 2026, already surpassing full-year 2025 totals; over 6,500 roles were cut in the first ten days of September. Uber, PayPal, Zomato, Amazon, Meta and Oracle restructured while increasing AI spending — a paradox where firms trim legacy roles but expand AI and data centre hiring.
5. Q4 OUTLOOK MODESTLY BETTER, WIDE GAPS. ManpowerGroup surveyed 39,878 employers across 42 countries: 43% plan to increase staffing, 14% reduce and 41% stay unchanged. India leads the NEO at 54%, Brazil 53%; the US and Vietnam both at 36%; Germany 15% and France 13%. Construction & Real Estate and Finance & Insurance lead sectors at 36%.
6. WORKERS WORRIED ABOUT JOBS AND SKILLS. ILO projects global unemployment to stay at 4.9% in 2026, about 186 million people. OECD recorded a record 670 million jobs in May 2026 but warns opportunities are unevenly distributed. LinkedIn says 52% of professionals are job hunting and nearly 80% feel unprepared. US worker confidence hit a record low of 42.9%.
What to watch today: US September 2026 nonfarm payrolls report — due early October 2026.
