00As the Lunar New Year approaches, Ho Chi Minh City transforms into a sea of yellow and red, with the Apricot Blossom Garden (Vuon Hoa Mai) at the Youth Cultural House becoming the center of attention. This annual event, part of the Vietnam Tet Festival which has been running for 18 years, is a must-visit for locals and tourists alike. Located on Pham Ngoc Thach Street, the garden features over 100 decorated apricot trees, creating a radiant atmosphere that signals the arrival of spring. The centerpiece of this year's display is a magnificent dragon sculpture, honoring the zodiac animal of the year and symbolizing strength and prosperity.
Since its opening on January 24th, the garden has been crowded with visitors eager to capture the perfect Tet photo. While the blossoms are artistic replicas, their bright yellow hue—a symbol of wealth and luck in Southern Vietnamese culture—perfectly captures the spirit of the holiday. Most visitors arrive dressed in traditional Ao Dai, the national garment of Vietnam, adding to the cultural richness of the scene. For those who don't have their own, the festival provides rental services with prices ranging from 50,000 to 100,000 VND, making it accessible for everyone to participate in the tradition. Accessories like paper fans, headbands (man), and decorative branches are also available to enhance the photoshoot experience.
The garden isn't just about photos; it's a nostalgic journey. Various miniature landscapes recreate the atmosphere of ancient Tet, featuring three-compartment houses, traditional craft villages, and wood-fired kitchens. Materials like conical hats (non la), ceramic pots, and sedge mats are used to evoke a sense of heritage. Visitors can also enjoy the 'Calligrapher Street' (Pho Ong Do) nearby, where artists write lucky verses in beautiful script. The festival runs until February 14th (the 5th day of the Lunar New Year), offering art performances like Hat Boi and Lion Dances. It is a vibrant celebration of Vietnamese identity in the heart of modern Saigon.
