Hanoi’s Viral Mushroom Cocoa: The Creative Street Food Taking Over the Old Quarter

Hanoi’s Old Quarter is world-renowned for its traditional Pho and Bun Cha, but a new, visually stunning snack is currently capturing the hearts (and Instagram feeds) of the younger generation. Located on Hang Vai Street in the Hoan Kiem district, a small tea shop owned by Thu Huyen has introduced 'Mushroom Cocoa' (Milo Nấm), a dessert that looks exactly like a wild mushroom growing out of rich, dark soil. This creative twist on the classic Milo chocolate drink has quickly become a must-try for foodies exploring the capital.

The 'Mushroom Cocoa' is served in a traditional bamboo steamer, which adds to its rustic and organic aesthetic. The construction of the dish is a multi-layered process designed to balance texture and flavor. It begins with a base of finely shaved ice, drizzled with sweet condensed milk. This is followed by a thick layer of premium cocoa powder. To create the 'soil' effect, the shop uses crushed Oreo cookie crumbs, providing a crunchy contrast to the soft layers beneath. The centerpiece is the 'mushroom' itself, crafted from two types of pudding. The stem is a firm white pudding, while the cap is a softer, cocoa-infused pudding. The two parts are held together by a small bamboo skewer, requiring a delicate touch to assemble without breaking the jiggly thạch.

At only 35,000 VND (approximately $1.50) per serving, the dish is an affordable luxury. Customers often enjoy 'tapping' the mushroom cap to see it wiggle—a sensation that has gone viral on TikTok. Because of the delicate nature of the pudding and the shaved ice base, the shop only serves the dish for dine-in customers to ensure the best quality. With 300 to 400 servings sold daily, the shop has become a bustling hub of activity. If you find yourself on Hang Vai Street, be prepared for a short wait, but the combination of the cool ice, rich chocolate, and playful presentation makes it a highlight of Hanoi’s modern street food scene.
