The "Áo dài 100" project is a breathtaking cultural and photographic journey conceived by Hoàng Thanh Tùng and his wife. Launched in May 2018, this ambitious initiative aims to showcase the timeless elegance of the Vietnamese traditional dress, the Ao Dai, at 100 of the world’s most iconic and beautiful landmarks. Through the lens of art and travel photography, the couple seeks to promote Vietnamese heritage globally and foster a deeper appreciation for their national costume.

The inspiration for "Áo dài 100" came six years ago when social media debates surfaced regarding the representation of the Ao Dai in international fashion shows. Rather than engaging in online arguments, Hoàng Thanh Tùng, then 41, and his wife decided to take a proactive approach. They chose to let the beauty of the dress speak for itself against the backdrops of world-famous sights. By February 2020, they had visited 12 countries and completed 28 stunning photo shoots. Although the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily halted their travels, the couple enthusiastically resumed their journey in 2023, reaching an impressive milestone of 61 out of 100 destinations.

One of the most challenging and rewarding shoots took place in Nepal. To capture the perfect shot, the couple embarked on an arduous 18-day trek to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Peak, reaching altitudes over 5,000 meters. The resulting photograph on Nangkartshang Peak, with the majestic Ama Dablam of the Himalayas looming in the background, stands as one of Tùng's absolute favorites due to the extreme physical demands and low oxygen levels they had to overcome.

In stark contrast to the snowy peaks of Nepal, another highlight of the "Áo dài 100" project is a vibrant photo taken at Braemar Hill in Hong Kong. Here, a striking red Ao Dai stands out magnificently against a sea of towering skyscrapers overlooking Victoria Harbour. Capturing this image required patience, as the couple waited two days for the perfect golden hour light to break through the overcast sky.

Cultural respect is paramount in their journey. When visiting sacred spiritual sites, such as the historic Xieng Thong Temple in Luang Prabang, Laos, or the ornate Thean Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, they carefully select modest fabrics and elegant poses that honor local customs. This mindful approach has also guided their sessions at the legendary Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the majestic Rajamontean Temple in Chiang Mai, and the glittering Silver Temple in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Wherever they go, the sight of the graceful Vietnamese Ao Dai draws admiration from locals and tourists alike.

Looking ahead, the couple plans to expand "Áo dài 100" to new horizons. Their upcoming itinerary includes Australia and a tour of Northern Europe, including Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Ultimately, they hope to bring the Ao Dai to the extreme landscapes of the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as Vietnam's own natural wonders like the historic Truong Sa islands and the world-largest Son Doong Cave.
