Nestled along the lower banks of the Perfume River, just 8km from Truong Tien Bridge, lies the ancient village of Thanh Tien. For over 300 years, this village in Phu Mau, Hue, has been the heart of a unique traditional craft: making paper flowers. Recognized as an official traditional craft village in 2013, Thanh Tien is a place where agriculture and art intertwine. While the residents are primarily farmers, they return to their intricate paper-making tools during the 'Thang Chap' (the 12th lunar month) to prepare for the Tet holiday, continuing a legacy that has survived for centuries.

Thanh Tien paper flowers are prized for their vibrant colors, durability, and deep spiritual significance. Historically, these flowers were used to decorate altars, shrines, and kitchens, replaced only once a year during the Lunar New Year to signify a fresh start. The process is entirely manual and requires immense skill. Using local materials like bamboo and dyed paper, artisans mimic various species including orchids, lilies, chrysanthemums, and roses. However, the most famous creation is the paper lotus. These lotuses are so realistic that they have been featured in major events like the Hue Festival and are permanently displayed in the Hue Citadel and the Nguyen Chi Dieu Memorial House.

Visiting the village during the year-end season is a sensory delight. You can witness artisans like Mr. Nguyen Hoa and Mrs. Tran Thi Thanh Tam, who have practiced the craft for over 40 years, split bamboo into thin stalks to create the stems. The petals are cut using iron chisels and hand-folded to create natural textures. For travel bloggers and culture enthusiasts, Thanh Tien offers a peaceful escape through vast rice fields into a world of color. A pair of these flowers costs only about 10,000 VND, yet they carry the soul of Hue’s heritage. The village has become a popular destination for international tourists and students looking to experience authentic Vietnamese culture firsthand.
