Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh Highlights Stronger ASEAN-Australia Relations

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the Special Summit in Melbourne celebrating the landmark 50th anniversary of ASEAN-Australia dialogue relations. The summit served as a historic platform for leaders to review five decades of dynamic partnership and outline a strategic vision for future cooperation in an increasingly complex global landscape. Australia holds a distinguished position as ASEAN’s very first dialogue partner and one of the first to establish a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the bloc.

Economic cooperation was a key focus of the summit, with bilateral trade reaching over $101 billion in 2022 and foreign direct investment from Australia to ASEAN surging to over $2 billion. Leaders from both sides agreed to maximize the benefits of the newly upgraded ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). To further bolster these ties, Australia announced a significant $2 billion investment facility alongside an additional $222.5 million funding package for the Mekong sub-region, aimed at promoting sustainable development and clean energy transitions.

In his address, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh praised the geographical and political closeness between ASEAN and Australia, proposing 'three breakthroughs' and 'three enhancements' to guide future relations. He emphasized the need for breakthroughs in trade and investment, high-quality human resource development, and science-technology collaboration, including digital economy agreements and AI development. Furthermore, he called for enhanced political trust, sub-regional cooperation, and cultural exchanges, leveraging the vibrant community of over one million people of ASEAN heritage living in Australia, including over 350,000 Vietnamese-Australians.
