Major Traffic Congestion in Hanoi and HCMC After Tet Holiday Rush

As the 7-day Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday comes to a close, the gateways to Vietnam's two largest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, have experienced massive traffic congestion. Millions of citizens who traveled to their hometowns for the festivities are now returning to resume work, leading to long queues on major highways and at transportation hubs. In Hanoi, the Phap Van - Cau Gie highway saw lines of vehicles stretching for kilometers as early as 3:00 PM on the final day of the break. The Nước Ngầm bus station and Ngoc Hoi street were also heavily congested with motorcycles and cars carrying families and luggage back into the city center.

Similarly, in Ho Chi Minh City, the western gateway via National Highway 1 was packed with travelers returning from the Mekong Delta provinces. Under the hot sun, many people expressed exhaustion after journeys that took significantly longer than usual. Tan Son Nhat International Airport also recorded its highest passenger volume of the season, with nearly 148,000 people passing through its terminals in a single day. Authorities have been working tirelessly to regulate traffic, but the sheer volume of vehicles makes delays inevitable. This annual migration highlights the challenges of urban infrastructure during peak holiday seasons. Despite the heavy traffic, the mood remains generally positive as people bring back gifts and memories from their time spent with family. For travelers and commuters, this period requires patience and careful planning to navigate the busy roads and reach their destinations safely.
