For many families, the Lunar New Year is a time for traditional gatherings, but for Ms. Vu Minh Diep and her family from Ho Chi Minh City, it has become a tradition to explore the world. This year, they embarked on a 7-day, 6-night journey to Flores Island, Indonesia, to witness the prehistoric Komodo dragons and the surreal beauty of the Pink Beach (Pantai Merah). Their trip offers a perfect blueprint for travelers looking to venture beyond Bali and discover the hidden gems of the Indonesian archipelago.

The family opted for a 2-day, 1-night boat tour, which allowed them to sleep under the stars and visit seven different islands. Highlights included Kelor Island with its crystal-clear turquoise waters and Padar Island, where a hike to the summit reveals a breathtaking view of three bays with different colored sands: white, black, and pink. At Komodo National Park, they came face-to-face with the world's largest lizards. While these creatures appear sluggish, Ms. Diep warns travelers to always follow the ranger's instructions and maintain a safe distance due to the dragon's venomous bite.

One of the most magical moments of their trip was at Kalong Island, also known as Bat Island. As the sun set, thousands of giant fruit bats emerged from the mangroves, filling the orange sky in a spectacular natural display. The family also spent time at Pantai Merah, one of the few pink sand beaches in the world, created by microscopic organisms called Foraminifera. With a total cost of around 10 million VND per person (roughly $400 USD), including flights and tours, this adventure proved to be more affordable than many domestic flights during the holiday season. From the Santorini-style hotels in Labuan Bajo to the fresh seafood at the SO Bajo Night Market, this Indonesian journey was a feast for the senses and a testament to the rewards of off-the-beaten-path travel.
