A Remarkable Lunar New Year Gathering: The 120-Member Family in Thai Binh

In an era where small nuclear families are the norm, a story from Thai Binh province has captured the public's imagination. Chị Bùi Thị Phương, a 30-year-old living in Hanoi, recently shared photos of her massive extended family gathering for the Giap Thin Lunar New Year. The sheer scale of the reunion is breathtaking: the family now totals 120 members, and nearly 100 of them managed to gather at their ancestral home in Kien Xuong, Thai Binh, to celebrate the start of the year together.

The family's history is as rich as its numbers. The original patriarch and matriarch, who served as local leaders in their village decades ago, had 12 children—six sons and six daughters. Although the parents passed away nearly 20 years ago, their legacy of unity lives on. Each of their children now has three to five children of their own, leading to a sprawling network of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To accommodate these massive gatherings, the family built a dedicated two-story worship house. The first floor is for ancestral altars, while the second floor is a large communal space where the family can eat, sleep, and bond during their annual two-day stay.

Organizing a feast for such a crowd is a monumental task, requiring at least 20 large dining trays (mâm cỗ) for every meal. The highlight of the reunion is the 'Li Xi' or lucky money tradition. Chị Phương alone prepared over 70 red envelopes to distribute to the elders and the many children in the family. This year was particularly special as it marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of the family's original patriarch and matriarch. For this family, Tet is not just a holiday; it is a powerful reaffirmation of their roots and the unbreakable bonds of blood, proving that even as they find success in different cities like Hanoi and Phu Tho, home will always be Thai Binh.
