Even in intense blazes, liquid accelerants like gasoline, kerosene, or lighter fluid often seep into flooring, baseboards, or soil beneath the floorboards, shielded from the direct flames. Highly sensitive sniffing dogs, known as hydro-carbon K9s, can detect these trace chemicals. Samples are then collected in airtight containers and analyzed in laboratories using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This advanced technology can identify the exact chemical signature of the accelerant, linking it back to a specific purchase or suspect.

Furthermore, the victims themselves provide undeniable clues. Forensic pathologists can easily distinguish between a victim who died as a result of the fire and one who was murdered beforehand. If a person was alive during the fire, they would have inhaled smoke, leaving soot in their trachea and high levels of carbon monoxide in their blood. The absence of these indicators strongly suggests the victim was deceased before the fire was set. Through meticulous analysis, forensic science transforms the silent ruins of a fire into a powerful voice for the victims, ensuring that no matter how clever the cover-up, the truth rises from the ashes.
