Kyawthuite: Unveiling the Rarest Mineral on Earth Found in Myanmar

In the world of geology and mineralogy, few discoveries are as exclusive as kyawthuite. Recognized by the International Mineralogical Association in 2015, this gemstone is officially considered the rarest mineral on Earth. To date, only a single crystal has been discovered: a deep orange, 1.61-carat (0.3-gram) stone unearthed in the Mogok region of Myanmar. Currently, this precious specimen is preserved in the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Scientifically, kyawthuite has the chemical formula Bi3+Sb5+O4, with trace amounts of tantalum. While its components—bismuth (Bi) and antimony (Sb)—are not inherently rare, the specific conditions required for its formation make it unique. It is the only known bismuth-antimony oxide. Researchers believe its existence may be linked to the complex geological history of the region, specifically the tectonic collision when India drifted northward and impacted the Asian continent approximately 180 million years ago.
