The Rare 700-Year-Old Elephant Bone Chair: A Unique Cultural Treasure of Vietnam

In the heart of Pleiku, Gia Lai province, visitors are being treated to a truly 'one-of-a-kind' exhibition at Dai Doan Ket Square. The centerpiece of this cultural display is an extraordinary chair made entirely from the bones of a rare white elephant, estimated to be 700 years old. Owned by Mr. Dang Minh Tam, a dedicated cultural researcher from Lam Dong, this artifact offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient traditions of the Central Highlands (Tay Nguyen) and the legendary 'Elephant Kings' who once ruled the forests.

Mr. Tam’s collection goes beyond just the chair; it includes a comprehensive set of elephant hunting tools with a history spanning over a century. These items, such as leather ropes, specialized hooks, and wooden mallets, tell the story of a time when elephant taming was central to the survival and labor of local tribes. Interestingly, the customs surrounding elephant hunting were deeply rooted in respect and sustainability. Ancient laws forbade the capture of mother elephants or those essential for reproduction, focusing instead on young males that could be trained for heavy labor and transport.

Constructed using massive bones held together by sturdy traditional ropes, the chair was historically reserved for the most successful hunters—those who had captured at least 18 elephants. The exhibition also highlights the spiritual connection between the people and these majestic creatures. For instance, wives of hunters followed strict taboos while their husbands were away, such as avoiding sewing or using fragrances, believed to protect the hunters from misfortune or distractions in the wild.

By bringing this 'Elephant House' to a public space, Mr. Tam hopes to preserve the fading memories of a culture where humans and elephants lived in close harmony. As wild elephant populations dwindle, these artifacts serve as vital educational tools for younger generations to understand the strength, loyalty, and cultural significance that the elephant represents in Vietnamese history.
