A Dignified Retirement: Veteran Vietnamese Artists Move to New Nursing Home

In a heartwarming development for the Vietnamese arts community, several legendary veteran artists have recently relocated to the Thi Nghe Nursing Home in Ho Chi Minh City. This move marks a significant improvement in their quality of life, as many of these cultural icons had been living in deteriorating conditions or in isolation. Among those moving into the facility are the beloved writer and actor Mac Can and the famous stage actor Huynh Thanh Tra. Under a special decision by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, these artists will now receive free healthcare, professional nursing, and daily meals, ensuring they can enjoy their golden years with the dignity they deserve.

Mac Can, now 79 years old, is a household name in Vietnam, known for his versatile roles and literary contributions. In recent years, he has struggled with severe arthritis, making mobility a challenge. After his wife passed away in 2022, he lived in a cramped rental room with little support. Now, in his new 16-square-meter room at Thi Nghe, he has access to 24/7 medical assistance and a peaceful environment. He expressed his joy at being able to open his window each morning to see the greenery and enjoy the fresh air, a stark contrast to his previous living situation. Similarly, Huynh Thanh Tra, a star of the 1970s and 80s famous for his role in 'Loan Mat Nhung,' has finally found a stable home after years of hardship and living with relatives.

The transition was made possible through the efforts of the City's Department of Culture and Sports, as well as fellow artists like Kim Cuong and Trinh Kim Chi. Kim Cuong even organized donations to equip each artist's room with a television. The Thi Nghe Nursing Home, spanning 14,000 square meters, currently houses over 100 elderly residents, including those who served the country and those in need of specialized care. The facility provides a communal space where these veterans of the stage can reminisce, exercise, and support one another. This initiative reflects the community's deep gratitude for the artists who dedicated their lives to enriching Vietnamese culture.
