Ancient history is filled with remarkable engineering feats, particularly in the realm of military technology. Among the most feared weapons of the past was the Zhuge Crossbow, or 'Lien Hoan No,' credited to the brilliant strategist Zhuge Liang of the Shu Han dynasty. Designed during his preparations for the Northern Expeditions against the Cao Wei, this weapon was a precursor to modern automatic firearms. Unlike standard crossbows of the time, the Zhuge Crossbow featured a sophisticated mechanism that automatically fed arrows into the firing groove. Utilizing a lever system rather than manual pulling, it allowed soldiers to fire up to 15 iron-tipped arrows in just 10 seconds. This 'machine gun' of the ancient world provided a massive tactical advantage, allowing for rapid-fire suppression of enemy forces.

Another groundbreaking invention from the Ming Dynasty was the 'Hỏa Long Xuất Thủy' or 'Fire Dragon Out of Water.' This was essentially an early form of a multi-stage rocket. It consisted of a main rocket body with three smaller fire arrows housed in the dragon's mouth. Once ignited, the secondary fuses would trigger, launching the projectiles at enemy ships or infantry. This weapon is widely considered a spiritual ancestor to modern ballistic missiles. Moving to the West, the Claw of Archimedes stands as a testament to Greek ingenuity. Designed by the mathematician Archimedes to protect the city of Syracuse from Roman naval attacks, this crane-like machine used large hooks to lift enemy ships partially out of the water before dropping them, causing them to capsize. These weapons exemplify how ancient civilizations used advanced physics and engineering to dominate the battlefield long before the industrial age.
