Every year, from the 4th to the 7th day of the Lunar New Year, the residents of Ha Nam Island in Quang Yen, Quang Ninh province, gather for one of the most unique and heart-warming traditions in Vietnam: the Tien Cong Festival. This festival is a profound expression of 'filial piety' and 'gratitude,' where families organize grand processions to honor their elderly members—affectionately known as 'Cu Thuong'—who have reached the milestone ages of 80, 90, or 100 years. This year's festival was particularly significant, marking the 590th anniversary of the founding of the Ha Nam region (1434-2024).

The highlight of the festival occurs on the 7th day of Tet, when the 'Cu Thuong' are carried to the Tien Cong Temple in traditional red hammocks (Vong Dao). These processions are led by children and grandchildren, accompanied by traditional music and vibrant banners. For many families, this is the most important event of the year. For instance, the family of Mr. Pham Van Thanh and Mrs. Le Thi Quyen, the only couple celebrating their 80th birthday together this year, spent hundreds of millions of VND to ensure a memorable ceremony. Similarly, Mr. Ngo Dang Trung, an 80-year-old veteran with 54 years of Party membership, proudly wore his war medals during the procession, attributing his longevity to the protection of the Tien Cong ancestors.

According to the organizing committee, 140 elderly residents participated in the temple ceremonies this year. This included three centenarians, 46 nonagenarians, and 91 octogenarians. The festival is not just a family celebration but a communal tribute to the 17 founding ancestors (Tien Cong) who traveled from Thang Long (modern-day Hanoi) in the 15th century. Legend has it that these pioneers followed the sound of croaking frogs to find a freshwater source on the island, eventually building dikes and reclaiming land from the sea to establish the villages that exist today.

The Tien Cong Festival was officially recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017. It serves as a living museum of the cultural values of ancient Thang Long, preserved for over 300 years by the islanders. Visitors to the festival are treated to a spectacle of color and sound, but the underlying message is one of historical continuity and respect for one's roots. As the crowds fill the courtyard of the Tien Cong Temple, the spirit of the ancestors lives on through the vibrant celebrations of their descendants, ensuring that the history of Ha Nam Island remains a proud part of Vietnam's national identity.
