The Reality of the Tet Flower Market: Discarded Peach Blossoms in Thanh Hoa

While many celebrate the joy of the Lunar New Year, there is a bittersweet side to the holiday market that often goes unnoticed. In Thanh Hoa city on the 30th day of Tet, the once-bustling flower markets fell silent, leaving behind piles of unsold wild peach blossoms. Despite significant price cuts by traders, consumer demand was lower than expected this year, leading to a heartbreaking scene where hundreds of beautiful branches were discarded on the sidewalks. For many small-scale traders who travel from mountainous regions to the city to sell these 'đào rừng' (wild peach) branches, the season ended in financial loss rather than celebration.

In some areas, traders chose to chop down their remaining stock or leave them in heaps rather than sell them for a pittance, a move intended to maintain the value of the flowers for future years. However, this also meant that many hours of hard labor and transportation costs went unrewarded. Interestingly, some local residents were seen scavenging through the discarded piles to find branches that were still blooming, while some kind-hearted traders gifted their remaining stock to laborers and passersby. Larger ornamental trees like quat (kumquat) and grapefruit trees were often loaded back onto trucks to be replanted for the next season, but for the cut peach branches, there was no such second chance. This situation reflects the economic challenges faced by many during the 2024 holiday season, where reduced spending power impacted the traditional flower trade. It serves as a reminder of the risks involved in seasonal commerce and the unpredictable nature of holiday markets. Despite the waste, the sight of pink blossoms still opening up on the side of the road offered a final, silent salute to the arrival of Spring, even if they never made it into a family's living room.
