After a meticulous four-year restoration project with an investment of over 120 billion VND, the magnificent Kien Trung Palace (Điện Kiến Trung) inside the Hue Imperial City (Đại Nội Huế) has officially reopened its doors to public visitors. Breathed back to life just in time for the Lunar New Year (Tet Giap Thin), this historical masterpiece is capturing the hearts of both domestic and international travelers eager to experience Vietnam's rich royal heritage.

Originally constructed between 1921 and 1923 under the reign of Emperor Khai Dinh, Kien Trung Palace served as the primary living and working quarters for two of the Nguyen Dynasty's last monarchs, Emperor Khai Dinh and Emperor Bao Dai. Positioned strategically along the sacred central axis (trục thần đạo) of the Imperial City, it stands alongside other iconic structures such as Thai Hoa Palace (điện Thái Hòa), Can Chanh Palace (điện Cần Chánh), Can Thanh Palace (điện Càn Thành), and Khon Thai Palace (cung Khôn Thái). Tragically, the ravages of war in 1947 reduced this architectural marvel to ruins, leaving behind only its concrete foundations.

Today, the fully restored Kien Trung Palace stands as a testament to exceptional craftsmanship, blending traditional Vietnamese imperial aesthetics with French colonial and Italian Renaissance influences. Visitors are mesmerized by the vibrant red-lacquered wooden window frames on the second floor, the elaborate porcelain and glass mosaic murals (khảm sành sứ) decorating the walls, and the lush, colorful flower gardens surrounding the palace grounds.

Inside, tourists can explore a curated exhibition displaying rare personal artifacts belonging to Emperors Khai Dinh and Bao Dai. The grand reopening during Tet drew tens of thousands of visitors who dressed in traditional Ao Dai to capture stunning photos against the backdrop of this architectural jewel. According to the Thua Thien Hue Department of Tourism, the Hue monuments attracted over 65,000 visitors during the first three days of the Lunar New Year alone. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an architecture lover, or a traveler looking for the ultimate cultural experience in Vietnam, Kien Trung Palace in Hue is an absolute must-visit destination.
