00The Festival Pho 2024 recently opened in Nam Dinh province, marking a significant milestone in the journey to elevate Vietnamese culinary culture on the global stage. This grand event, attended by high-ranking officials including the Secretary of the Nam Dinh Provincial Party Committee, Pham Gia Tuc, and representatives from various international embassies, showcases the deep-rooted traditions of Pho. The festival is not just a celebration of a dish but a strategic move to have Pho recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Nam Dinh, often regarded as the cradle of Pho, provided the perfect backdrop for this three-day extravaganza. One of the primary highlights of the event was the creation of a massive 300-liter pot of Pho, prepared by 20 master artisans and a support team of 30. This giant pot required 40kg of beef, 20kg of fresh herbs, and a complex blend of traditional Vietnamese spices such as cinnamon, star anise, and cloves. The aromatic broth served thousands of eager visitors, demonstrating the communal spirit and technical skill involved in traditional Pho preparation.
Beyond the giant pot, the festival featured 50 booths representing famous Pho brands from across Vietnam. Visitors had the unique opportunity to sample regional variations, from the corn Pho of Ha Giang and the sour Pho of Lang Son to the innovative artichoke Pho of Da Lat and the banana powder Pho. Each bowl told a story of its region, using local ingredients to modify the classic recipe while maintaining the soul of the dish.
Mr. Tran Le Doai, Vice Chairman of the Nam Dinh Provincial People's Committee, emphasized that Pho is more than just a popular street food; it is a cultural asset with historical and scientific value. The festival also included interactive workshops where tourists could learn the delicate process of making Pho noodles from scratch, ensuring that the ancient techniques are passed down to future generations. As Vietnam continues to develop its national brand through tourism, events like Festival Pho 2024 play a crucial role in promoting the country's identity. For many attendees, like 64-year-old local Nguyen Viet Hung, the festival was a nostalgic journey back to the authentic flavors of 'Pho xua' (ancient Pho) while embracing the diversity of modern Vietnamese cuisine.
