The Dark Side of Wealth: Aluminum Recycling Pollution in Bac Ninh’s Billionaire Village

In the heart of Bac Ninh province lies Man Xa village, often referred to as the 'Billionaire Village' due to the immense wealth generated from its thriving aluminum recycling industry. However, this prosperity comes at a devastating environmental and physical cost. Man Xa is home to nearly 300 production households and approximately 400 aluminum smelting furnaces, making it the largest aluminum recycling hub in Northern Vietnam. While the industry has brought mansions and luxury cars to the area, it has also blanketed the village in toxic smoke and hazardous waste.

The situation in Man Xa is a dire warning about the consequences of unregulated industrial growth. Residents live in a state of constant environmental crisis, with thick smoke filling the air and aluminum slag piled high along roadsides and even in local cemeteries. To escape the dust, many families are forced to keep their doors and windows tightly sealed 24/7, often reinforcing their homes with corrugated iron sheets to block out the pollutants. Despite these efforts, the health impact is undeniable. Long-term exposure to these toxins has led to a rise in respiratory issues and more serious conditions, such as cancer, among the local population.

The recycling process in Man Xa remains largely manual and primitive. Workers often operate without any protective gear, sometimes wearing only a simple cloth mask while handling molten metal and toxic fumes. The economic incentive is strong—workers can earn between 15 to 20 million VND per month—but the long-term health risks are staggering. Local authorities estimate that the village generates 3 to 4 tons of aluminum slag every day, with a total accumulated waste of over 370,000 tons currently sitting in the environment.

Efforts to mitigate the pollution have been slow and difficult. While the Bac Ninh provincial government has issued fines totaling billions of VND and suspended several violating facilities, the sheer scale of the waste makes a quick solution nearly impossible. The 'Billionaire Village' serves as a complex case study of the trade-off between economic gain and environmental sustainability. For the residents of Man Xa, the dream of wealth has turned into a nightmare of pollution, highlighting the urgent need for modernized waste treatment facilities and stricter environmental enforcement in craft villages.
