Confucius is globally recognized as one of the most influential philosophers in history, yet very little is widely known about the man who sired him: Shuliang He. Born into the Lu State during the Spring and Autumn period of ancient China, Shuliang He was a man of remarkable physical strength and military prowess. According to historical records and legends, he was a giant of his time, standing over seven feet tall and possessing the strength to lift heavy city gates single-handedly. Despite his military achievements, his personal life was marked by a desperate quest for a male heir to carry on his lineage. After having nine daughters and a disabled son, Shuliang He, in his late 70s, sought a new union with a young woman named Yan Zhengzai.

This union, though unconventional due to the age gap, eventually led to the birth of Kong Qiu, the boy who would become Confucius. Shuliang He passed away when Confucius was only three years old, leaving the future sage to be raised in poverty by his mother. However, the physical and moral foundation laid by his father's legacy played a crucial role in shaping Confucius's worldview. Shuliang He represented the traditional values of bravery and duty, which Confucius would later transform into a comprehensive system of ethics and social harmony. Understanding the father provides a deeper context for the philosopher's emphasis on filial piety and ancestral respect. This gallery explores the life of Shuliang He, bridging the gap between myth and historical fact. We delve into the archaeological findings and classical texts that describe his legendary strength and the social standing of the Kong family in ancient Lu. By examining the roots of Confucius's family tree, we gain a better appreciation for the environment that produced China's greatest teacher. His father's story is a testament to the enduring impact of lineage and the cultural shifts of the era.
