The Hoa thương hội quán, a significant historical and cultural relic in Thanh Hoa City, Vietnam, is currently facing a dire state of degradation. Established in the early 19th century by the local Chinese community, this architectural gem was once a bustling hub for cultural activities and trade. Located in what was formerly known as Phu My, the site was officially recognized as a provincial-level historical and cultural relic in 2010. However, despite its prestigious status, the passage of time and a lack of consistent maintenance have turned this once-magnificent structure into a collection of ruins.

Architecturally, the Hoa thương hội quán is a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of the 1800s. It was constructed using high-quality materials including ironwood (lim), durable bricks, decorative tiles, and blue stone. The complex originally featured several distinct sections: the triple-gate (tam quan), a front hall (tiền sảnh), the wind-welcoming tower (tháp nghinh phong), a middle hall (trung đường), and the rear sanctuary (hậu cung). Today, much of this grandeur has vanished. Visitors to the site at 248 Tran Phu Street, Ba Dinh Ward, will find that the middle hall and the rear sanctuary have almost completely collapsed. The intricate tile roofs that once protected the structure have fallen through, leaving the interior exposed to the elements.

The history of the site is deeply intertwined with the development of Thanh Hoa. In 1960, the Chinese community handed the management of the hall over to the Vietnam Fatherland Front of Thanh Hoa Province. Over the decades, it served various purposes, including a stint as a public library and later as the headquarters for the Thanh Hoa Publishing House. Since the publishing house moved to a new location over a year ago, the site has remained largely abandoned. While some ironwood pillars remain standing, many are now being overtaken by wild vines and vegetation, further accelerating the decay of the wood.

Local authorities and the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Thanh Hoa have acknowledged the severity of the situation. In late 2022, proposals were made to the Provincial People's Committee to allocate budget and mobilize resources for the preservation, restoration, and recovery of the Hoa thương hội quán. Unfortunately, visible progress has yet to be made, and the front of the relic is currently being used by local residents as makeshift kiosks for selling goods. The loss of such a site would be a significant blow to the cultural landscape of the region, emphasizing the urgent need for heritage conservation efforts to save what remains of this 200-year-old landmark.
