In a tradition deeply rooted in Eastern culture, thousands of Vietnamese citizens have begun flocking to gold shops days before the official 'God of Wealth Day' (Vía Thần Tài). While the holiday traditionally falls on the 10th day of the first lunar month, many eager buyers started queuing as early as the 8th day (February 17th) to beat the rush and secure their 'luck' for the year. Gold is seen not just as a financial asset, but as a protective talisman that brings prosperity and peace to the household.

Major gold brands such as SJC and DOJI have seen their showrooms packed to capacity. In Hanoi, many shops had to arrange extra seating for customers waiting their turn. One customer, Mr. Vinh Quang from Tay Ho, shared that he chooses to buy on the 8th day because the number '8' symbolizes luck and wealth in many Asian cultures. This sentiment is echoed by many who believe that buying gold during this window ensures a smooth business year and financial stability. The demand isn't limited to business owners; people from all walks of life participate in the hope of a 'full and happy' year.

However, the gold market has been anything but stable. Since late 2023, prices have fluctuated wildly, reaching all-time highs before seeing sharp corrections. As of mid-February, SJC gold bars were trading around 78.45 to 78.82 million VND per tael. Financial experts and seasoned buyers often advise that during God of Wealth Day, one should only buy a small amount—perhaps one or two 'chi' (3.75 grams)—to symbolize luck, rather than making large investments. This strategy helps avoid potential losses if prices drop immediately after the holiday rush.

To meet the diverse needs of the public, jewelry stores have released a wide array of products, from traditional gold bars to intricate figurines of dragons (symbolizing the Year of the Dragon) and the God of Wealth himself. Despite the high prices and long wait times, the spirit of the holiday remains strong. The sight of employees 'selling gold without a break' is a clear indicator of the cultural importance placed on this annual ritual of seeking fortune and divine favor.
