Road to Hanoi Marathon: A Historic 7,000km Journey of Vintage Cars

The 'Road to Hanoi Marathon' recently concluded at the My Dinh F1 track, marking the end of an extraordinary 27-day journey through Southeast Asia. Organized by the Rally The Globe club from the UK, this event brought together 26 world-famous vintage cars to traverse nearly 7,000km across Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos. Among the legendary vehicles were the 1927 Bentley 4½ Le Mans, the 1929 Chrysler 75 Roadster, and the 1932 Rockne Six 75. These automotive treasures, some nearly a century old, faced the ultimate test of endurance. While 23 cars successfully crossed the finish line in Hanoi, three had to withdraw due to mechanical failures—a testament to the challenges of driving 'museum pieces' across diverse terrains. One notable participant was the Bentley 4½ Le Mans, valued at nearly $1 million, driven by an elderly British couple who expressed their deep love for Vietnam's landscapes and people. The local community in Hanoi welcomed the rally with their own collection of classics, including Volkswagen Beetles and rare Nissan Datsun Sports 1969 models. This event was more than just a race; it was a cultural exchange, highlighted by the hand-drawn sketches gifted to the drivers by local artists. The sight of these historic machines speeding around the F1 track provided an unforgettable experience for automotive enthusiasts and showcased Vietnam as a premier destination for international rallies.
