Thousands Gather for the Avalokitesvara Festival in Da Nang: A Spectacular Celebration of Buddhist Culture and Tradition

On March 28 (the 19th day of the second lunar month), the city of Da Nang became a center of spiritual devotion as thousands of people gathered for the Avalokitesvara Festival. Held at the Quan The Am Pagoda within the Marble Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son) national special relic site, the festival is one of the most significant Buddhist events in Vietnam. This year’s celebration was particularly special, extended to four days to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the liberation of Da Nang.

The festival is centered around the veneration of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, representing compassion, mercy, and tolerance. The highlights of the event included a grand procession of the Bodhisattva statue, which moved from the main hall to the central ritual stage. The atmosphere was filled with the scent of incense and the sound of chanting as monks, nuns, and pilgrims from across the country joined together to pray for national peace and prosperity.

One of the most visually stunning parts of the festival was the parade of flower cars. Seven beautifully decorated vehicles, featuring intricate dragon and phoenix designs, traveled through the streets of Da Nang to promote the festival's message of peace. Participants also witnessed elaborate costume performances, where practitioners dressed as Bodhisattvas and celestial beings, bringing Buddhist scriptures to life for the modern audience.

Recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2021, the Avalokitesvara Festival has grown from a local religious rite into a major cultural and tourism product for Central Vietnam. Despite the massive crowds, the event remained organized and respectful, with pilgrims finding every available space—even on bridges and high vantage points—to catch a glimpse of the sacred rituals. It remains a powerful testament to the enduring strength of Buddhist traditions in contemporary Vietnamese society.
