Located along the highly active Pacific Ring of Fire, Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. To protect its citizens and minimize the devastating impact of seismic activity, the nation has developed one of the most sophisticated and efficient Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) systems on the planet. This state-of-the-art technological network serves as a vital lifeline, saving countless lives by providing precious seconds of advance warning.

Managed by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the early warning system relies on a dense network of thousands of highly sensitive seismographs and ocean-floor sensors installed across the country. When an earthquake strikes, it releases two main types of seismic waves: fast-moving but less destructive P-waves (Primary waves), and slower but highly destructive S-waves (Secondary waves). The JMA's sensors instantly detect the initial P-waves, calculate the earthquake's epicenter and magnitude, and immediately broadcast alerts before the violent S-waves reach populated areas.

These crucial warnings are automatically delivered within seconds to mobile phones, television screens, radio stations, and public address systems. Even a warning of just 5 to 10 seconds allows high-speed Shinkansen trains to automatically apply their brakes, factories to shut down hazardous machinery, elevators to stop at the nearest floor, and individuals to take cover under sturdy furniture.
