Farmer Discovers Ancient Tomb Within Tomb While Preparing Family Burial Plot in Xuzhou, China

In a remarkable turn of events in Feng County, Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, a local farmer named Liu Guangjian made an extraordinary archaeological discovery. While digging a grave to bury his late mother in the ancestral family plot, Mr. Liu and his neighbors were startled when the ground suddenly gave way, revealing a deep hole. Upon closer inspection, they found a coffin situated directly beneath the area they were excavating. In Chinese culture, encountering another grave while digging a new one is often seen as a sign of misfortune, leading the family to immediately stop their work and relocate the burial site.

However, the news of the 'tomb within a tomb' quickly spread, attracting the attention of both treasure hunters and the authorities. Despite being offered large sums of money by individuals wanting to buy the land, Mr. Liu took the honorable route and reported the find to the Jiangsu Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics. Professional archaeologists soon arrived at the scene, and with the help of local police to secure the site, they began a formal excavation. The results were astounding: the tomb contained a wealth of artifacts from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, including gold hairpins, earrings, over 20kg of ancient coins, 40 pieces of jade, and a rare bronze mirror inscribed with 'Ngũ tử đăng khoa' (Five sons passing the imperial examinations).

This discovery is significant as Xuzhou was historically governed by 13 Chu Kings, and the region is known to be rich in ancient burials. Mr. Liu’s family had only moved to the area about 100 years ago and had unknowingly chosen a site that sat atop a much older historical structure. To support the preservation of these cultural treasures, the local government provided the family with a new piece of land and assisted in moving their ancestral graves. The artifacts found are now classified as Level 2 national cultural relics and are proudly displayed at the Xuzhou Museum. This story serves as a powerful reminder of the hidden history beneath our feet and the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
