A major environmental cleanup operation is underway at Ho Chi Minh City's iconic Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal. Over 10 sanitation workers from the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Environment Joint Stock Company have mobilized to clear over 100 tons of accumulated waste, plastic debris, and water hyacinths that had severely clogged a 40-meter section of the canal between Bridge No. 1 and Bridge No. 2 in the Tan Binh district.

The waste accumulation occurred over the past month due to a temporary delay in extending the waste collection and treatment contracts. During this period, the lack of regular maintenance combined with hot weather caused the stagnant water to turn black and emit a strong odor, causing significant discomfort for local residents. To tackle the massive buildup, specialized garbage-scooping boats were deployed. Due to the low clearance of several bridges along the canal, the cleanup crew had to start their shifts as early as 3:00 AM during low tide to navigate the boats to the target areas.

According to Mr. Truong Van Ho, the leader of the cleanup crew, this is the largest amount of accumulated waste the team has faced since the canal's historic renovation was completed in 2011. The team estimates it will take approximately 10 days of continuous labor to fully restore the canal to its clean state. Workers are manually retrieving large debris, such as discarded mattresses and tree branches, while the boats scoop up thousands of plastic bags, styrofoam boxes, and water hyacinths.

The Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal stretches nearly 10 kilometers through Districts 1, 3, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan, and Tan Binh before emptying into the Saigon River. Once a heavily polluted waterway lined with temporary slums, the canal underwent a massive transformation 13 years ago, earning its reputation as 'the most beautiful inner-city canal in Ho Chi Minh City.' Local residents are eagerly anticipating the completion of the cleanup so they can once again enjoy walking along the scenic canal banks in a clean and fresh environment.
