Hanoi’s Spectacular Drone Show: 2,024 Drones Light Up West Lake

In a breathtaking fusion of ancient history and cutting-edge modern technology, the city of Hanoi recently hosted an extraordinary drone light show rehearsal over the scenic waters of West Lake (Hồ Tây). To prepare for the official Lunar New Year (Tet) Eve celebration for the Year of the Dragon (Giap Thin), a fleet of exactly 2,024 synchronized drones took to the sky. Despite chilly winter temperatures of 15°C, light drizzle, and strong winds, the technical team successfully executed a flawless 15-minute aerial performance that left onlookers in awe.

This high-tech light festival was designed to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and historical milestones of Vietnam’s capital. Security was tightly managed around the West Lake area, and local residents in surrounding buildings temporarily turned off their lights to ensure the vibrant colors of the drones could be seen with maximum clarity. Each drone was carefully prepped, fitted with high-capacity batteries, and tested to ensure they could safely navigate the windy conditions.

The show took viewers on a visual journey through 1,000 years of Hanoi’s history. One of the most emotional moments of the performance was the depiction of the 'Royal Decree on the Transfer of the Capital' (Chiếu dời đô). In the year 1010, King Lý Thái Tổ made the historic decision to move the capital of Đại Cồ Việt from the mountainous stronghold of Hoa Lư to the fertile plains of Đại La, renaming it Thăng Long (Rising Dragon)—the birthplace of modern Hanoi.

Following the decree, the drones seamlessly rearranged themselves to form the majestic Ly Dynasty Dragon, a symbol of national pride, peace, and prosperity. The show also highlighted several of Hanoi's most beloved architectural landmarks, including the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long, the 1,500-year-old Trấn Quốc Pagoda, and the iconic Sword Lake (Hồ Gươm) featuring the legendary Turtle Tower and Thê Húc Bridge.

Other historical symbols beautifully rendered in the night sky included the unique architecture of the One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột), the historic Khuê Văn Các pavilion at the Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám), and the legendary Long Biên Bridge, which has stood as a silent witness to the city's triumphs for over a century. The performance concluded with a stunning tribute to the modern Ho Guom Opera House and a festive message wishing the nation a happy, prosperous, and successful New Year.
