At the top of this list is the Ruppell's griffon vulture, widely recognized as the highest-flying bird ever recorded. This impressive scavenger was documented flying at an incredible altitude of 37,000 feet (11,300 meters) when it unfortunately collided with a commercial airplane over Côte d'Ivoire. To survive at such heights, where oxygen is extremely scarce, these vultures possess a specialized type of hemoglobin that allows them to absorb oxygen more efficiently than other animals, enabling them to glide effortlessly across vast landscapes in search of food.

Another legendary high-flyer is the bar-headed goose, famous for its grueling migration over the Himalayas. These geese fly at altitudes of up to 29,000 feet (8,800 meters), crossing the world's highest mountain range to travel between their breeding grounds in Central Asia and their wintering grounds in India. Unlike vultures that rely on thermal updrafts to glide, bar-headed geese must actively flap their wings to maintain altitude in the thin air, a feat that requires immense cardiovascular strength and metabolic efficiency.

Other notable high-flyers include the common crane, which has been recorded crossing the Himalayas at altitudes of 33,000 feet, and the whooper swan, which can reach heights of 27,000 feet during migration. These birds utilize high-altitude winds to conserve energy during their long journeys, demonstrating a deep instinctual understanding of global weather patterns.
