00Located on the outskirts of Hanoi, Trieu Khuc is an ancient craft village famous for its traditional weaving, embroidery, and rich cultural heritage. Beyond its historical crafts, the village is home to one of the most unique and captivating traditional festivals in northern Vietnam. Held annually during the spring, the Trieu Khuc Village Festival is not only a time for celebration but also a sacred occasion to honor Bo Cai Dai Vuong Phung Hung, a legendary national hero who brought peace and prosperity to the land.
The absolute highlight of the festival is the performance of the 'Bong' dance, locally known as 'con di danh bong'. This fascinating dance precedes the sacred palanquin procession of the village's tutelary deity. What makes the Bong dance truly extraordinary is its cast: handsome, carefully selected local young men who cross-dress as graceful, coquettish village girls. To achieve this transformation, the dancers wear traditional 'mo qua' headscarves, apply makeup and lipstick, and dress in black skirts paired with vibrant, colorful bodices.
The dance consists of roughly 30 distinct choreographic styles, with three core movements: playing the small 'bong' drum horizontally, twisting the hands like blooming flowers, and gently stroking the sides of the drum. The performers must master the art of looking flirtatious and feminine while maintaining the underlying physical strength and martial spirit of a young man. This playful contrast creates a lively, joyful atmosphere that captivates thousands of spectators.
The origins of the Bong dance date back to the 8th century. Historical legends say that before besieging the Tong Binh citadel (modern-day Hanoi), Emperor Phung Hung stationed his troops in Trieu Khuc. To boost the morale of his soldiers and provide entertainment, he ordered his men to dress as women and perform dances with drums. Today, Trieu Khuc is one of the very few places in Vietnam that has preserved the authentic spirit and choreography of this ancient art. Alongside the Bong dance, the festival features majestic dragon dances, lion dances, and traditional folk games like wrestling, human chess, and cockfighting, making it a must-see cultural event.
