Embarking on an expedition to conquer Son Doong, the world’s largest cave located in Vietnam's Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, is widely considered a pinnacle lifetime achievement for adventurers. Beyond the challenging treks, colossal stalagmites, and unique cave ecosystems, the overnight camping spots inside the cave system offer an otherworldly experience. These campsites have been recognized by the UK's Daily Mail as some of the most spectacular campsites in the world.

The journey begins with the Hang Én Campsite, the first overnight stop on the way to Son Doong. Nestled inside the world's third-largest cave, this campsite is situated on a fine sandy beach next to a turquoise natural pool. Between December and February, due to the specific alignment of the Earth's axis and the sun, magnificent sunbeams pierce deep into the cave dome every morning, creating a surreal, fairytale-like atmosphere. Campers can swim directly in front of their tents, gaze at the starlit sky through the massive cave entrance, or watch monkeys and langurs swinging along the cliffs.

Moving deeper into the expedition, travelers spend their second night at the Doline 1 Campsite (Hố sụt 1). A doline is a massive sinkhole formed where the cave ceiling collapsed thousands of years ago, creating a natural skylight. Located nearly 5 kilometers from the entrance of Son Doong, this campsite sits at the edge of the doline, receiving soft, natural light from above. The high humidity and cooler temperatures here create a mystical mist. Just a short walk from the tents lies a refreshing underground river with temperatures ranging from 18 to 20 degrees Celsius, where hikers can swim safely using mandatory life jackets.

The final overnight stay is at the Doline 2 Campsite (Hố sụt 2), which is significantly larger than the first. This spectacular site is located near the "Garden of Edam," a lush underground primeval forest boasting ancient trees up to 40 meters tall that thrive on the sunlight pouring through the collapsed roof. The campsite is safely positioned on soft sand, far from potential flash flood pathways. On rainy days, campers can enjoy the spectacular view of waterfalls cascading from the cave ceiling.

To protect this pristine environment, operator Oxalis Adventures utilizes custom-designed, eco-friendly dry toilets that use rice husks to dry and deodorize waste, ensuring zero pollution. Tents are equipped with insulated pallets, double mattresses, and warm sleeping bags, ensuring a comfortable night's sleep amidst the wonders of nature.
