Fascinating Facts About the Four Surviving Hyena Species in the Wild

Hyenas are among the most misunderstood predators in the animal kingdom. Often portrayed in popular culture as cowardly scavengers, these highly intelligent and adaptable carnivores play a vital role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems. Today, there are only four surviving species of hyenas left on Earth, each possessing unique physical traits, social structures, and hunting behaviors that make them truly fascinating creatures to study.

The most famous and widespread of the group is the Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta).
