00Every spring, shortly after the vibrant celebrations of the Lunar New Year (Tet), thousands of travelers embark on a meaningful pilgrimage to Nam Dan District in Nghe An Province, Vietnam. Located just 15 kilometers from Vinh City, Nam Dan is celebrated as a cradle of Vietnamese history and culture, most notably as the revered hometown of President Ho Chi Minh. This scenic region attracts millions of visitors annually, offering a profound journey through well-preserved historic relics, ancestral temples, and serene natural landscapes.
At the heart of this cultural pilgrimage is the Kim Lien Special National Relic Area, which spans across the Kim Lien and Nam Giang communes. A primary highlight for any traveler is Sen Village (Làng Sen), home to the humble thatched cottage of Deputy Doctor Nguyen Sinh Sac, President Ho Chi Minh's father. Stepping into this historic residence, which preserves priceless artifacts from Ho Chi Minh’s childhood between 1901 and 1906, offers an intimate look into the early life of one of the 20th century's most influential leaders. Visitors can also stroll around the peaceful "Uncle Ho's Fish Pond," a beautiful pond established in 2018 where families gather to feed the carp.
A short distance from Sen Village lies the majestic Chung Son Temple on Chung Mountain. Recognized as a national historic site in 1991, this temple is dedicated to the ancestors of President Ho Chi Minh. Surrounded by lush greenery, stone staircases, and trickling waterfalls, the temple provides a tranquil space for reflection and spiritual rejuvenation.
Another essential stop is the Tomb of Mrs. Hoang Thi Loan, the beloved mother of President Ho Chi Minh, located on the slopes of the Nam Giang commune. During the spring season, the site is filled with young locals dressed in colorful traditional Ao Dai, capturing the beauty of the season. Visitors can participate in cultural experiences, such as traditional betel-quid wrapping, or receive traditional blessings distributed by local authorities.
For those seeking panoramic mountain views and spiritual peace, the nearby Dai Tue Pagoda is an absolute must-visit. Situated 17 kilometers from the Kim Lien Relic Area on the peak of Dai Hue Mountain, this 6,000-square-meter sanctuary holds four Vietnamese national records, including the most ruby statues, the largest collection of monolithic mulberry wood statues, the most pure Vietnamese calligraphy couplets, and the largest artificial lake on a mountain temple.
A trip to Nam Dan is incomplete without savoring local delicacies. Quaint rustic stalls offer traditional treats such as Che Lam (ginger-infused sticky rice cake) and soothing lotus flower tea. During the recent Tet Giap Thin holiday, Nghe An Province welcomed over 315,000 tourists, generating approximately 400 billion VND in revenue, with Nam Dan leading as the most popular destination. Whether you are a history enthusiast or a cultural traveler, a journey to the homeland of President Ho Chi Minh promises an unforgettable and enriching travel experience in Vietnam.
