Rare Vietnamese Banknotes Still in Circulation Today

While modern digital payments, banking apps, and polymer banknotes dominate daily transactions in Vietnam, there is still a fascinating world of older paper currency that remains legal tender. Over the years, the State Bank of Vietnam has transitioned most of its high-value denominations to durable polymer materials. However, several traditional cotton-paper banknotes are technically still in circulation today, though they have become incredibly rare and highly sought after by collectors.

Among these rare treasures are the older paper versions of the 10,000 VND, 20,000 VND, and 50,000 VND bills, which were widely used before the polymer transition in 2003. The red-hued 10,000 VND paper note, featuring the stunning scenery of Ha Long Bay, is particularly nostalgic for many Vietnamese people. Similarly, the blue 20,000 VND paper banknote and the purple-green 50,000 VND paper banknote are rarely seen in everyday change, making them prized possessions for numismatists.

In addition to these, low-denomination paper bills like the 100 VND, 200 VND, and 500 VND notes are still officially valid, though inflation has minimized their purchasing power. While you might occasionally spot a 500 VND note used as change at a local market or temple, the 100 VND and 200 VND notes have almost entirely vanished from active circulation. Today, these rare banknotes are kept as lucky charms, souvenirs, or valuable collector items, carrying a rich sense of history and nostalgia for Vietnam's economic journey.
