Severe Environmental Pollution at Quy Nhon Fishing Port Demands Urgent Action

Quy Nhon Fishing Port, located in Binh Dinh Province, Vietnam, plays a crucial role in the local economy, welcoming hundreds of fishing vessels daily. These boats arrive to sell seafood, restock fuel, and gather provisions for their next voyages. However, this bustling maritime activity has come at a heavy environmental cost. The port is currently facing a severe pollution crisis, with trash, plastic waste, and untreated wastewater threatening the local ecosystem and the health of nearby residents.

Recent investigations reveal a shocking level of pollution in the waters surrounding Quy Nhon Fishing Port. The water surface is heavily littered with household waste, plastic bottles, nylon bags, and discarded foam boxes. Furthermore, wastewater from seafood processing operations flows freely across the port, releasing a foul odor into the air. A major contributing factor to this crisis is the outdated wastewater treatment system. Despite being upgraded in 2018 through the Coastal Resources for Sustainable Development (CRSD) project, the system has failed to meet Vietnam's environmental standards. For the past five years, the port has continued to discharge substandard wastewater directly into the sea.

Mr. Dao Xuan Thien, Director of the Binh Dinh Fishing Port Management Board, acknowledged that the current wastewater treatment indicators do not meet regulatory standards. Efforts to find suitable contractors to upgrade the system have been unsuccessful. As a temporary solution, local authorities have agreed to connect the port's pre-treated wastewater to the municipal sewage system of Quy Nhon City, a plan that is currently being finalized. Additionally, the management board has requested funding to clear floating debris from the water surface, which is exacerbated by waste flowing from nearby residential areas. The Department of Natural Resources and Environment has urged immediate corrective measures to resolve this environmental hazard before the end of the year.
