00The Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum in Dien Bien Province is now home to one of the world's most impressive artistic feats: a giant panorama painting that vividly reconstructs the 56 days and nights of the 1954 campaign. This monumental work is a seamless integration of painting, installation, sculpture, sound, and light, offering visitors an immersive journey back in time. Spanning a length of 132 meters and a height of over 9 meters, the artwork was brought to life by over 200 young artists from across Vietnam. The project, which began in November 2019 and cost nearly 50 billion VND, covers a total area of 3,200 square meters, including 2,500 square meters of oil-on-canvas painting and 700 square meters of intricate physical installations. The ceiling of the dome depicts a peaceful sky, symbolizing the ultimate goal of the struggle.
The painting is divided into four distinct segments, each capturing a pivotal phase of the battle. The first segment, 'The Entire Nation Prepares for Resistance,' shows the logistical efforts of the Vietnamese people, including the legendary feat of pulling heavy artillery up steep mountain slopes. Over 4,500 individual characters are meticulously depicted using oil paints. The second segment, 'The Grand Prelude,' focuses on the opening battle at Him Lam, where Vietnamese forces achieved a decisive victory in just five hours. The third segment, 'The Historic Confrontation,' portrays the brutal hand-to-hand combat at A1 Hill, culminating in the 960kg explosive blast that shook the foundations of the French defenses. This section also pays tribute to heroes like Phan Dinh Giot, who sacrificed himself to block a loophole. The final segment, 'Victory,' depicts the moment the 'Determined to Fight and Win' flag flew atop De Castries' bunker on May 7, 1954. The use of realistic installations—such as trenches and shell casings—at the base of the painting creates a 3D effect that makes viewers feel as though they are standing on the actual battlefield. Today, the museum attracts thousands of visitors, contributing significantly to the local tourism industry and serving as a powerful reminder of the nation's resilience and desire for peace.
