Vietnam's Massive $100 Million Military History Museum Nears Completion in Hanoi

The highly anticipated Vietnam Military History Museum, a monumental project with an investment of 2.5 trillion VND (approximately $100 million USD), is rapidly nearing completion in Hanoi. Spanning an impressive 38.66 hectares along Thang Long Avenue in the Nam Tu Liem district, this state-of-the-art cultural landmark is set to become a major hub for historical preservation and tourism. Ground was first broken on the project in 2020, and the exhibition spaces are designed to showcase the rich, heroic history of the Vietnamese armed forces.

At the heart of the complex lies the main building, standing 35.8 meters tall with four above-ground floors and a semi-basement. Visitors will be greeted by a grand public square featuring two massive 2,000-square-meter lakes and the iconic 45-meter-high Victory Tower, a symbolic structure commemorating the year 1945 when Vietnam declared its independence. The museum's layout is meticulously organized to take visitors on a chronological journey through Vietnam's military conflicts. The first floor covers ancient history through the resistance wars against French and American forces. The second floor houses eight specialized thematic exhibits alongside seven major collections of weapons and military gear. On the third floor, visitors can explore interactive displays dedicated to twelve distinct military branches, including the Air Force, Navy, Commandos, Artillery, and Armor. The fourth floor will feature a multi-functional space, an experiential zone, and dining facilities, while the 10,000-square-meter basement will serve as a high-tech archival storage facility.

Among the most remarkable aspects of the museum is its vast collection of historic military hardware, displayed across outdoor exhibition areas totaling over 20,000 square meters. Many of these legendary aircraft and tanks are national treasures with incredible combat histories. Notably, the museum houses the MiG-21 fighter jet number 4324, a national treasure credited with shooting down 14 American aircraft. Another legendary aircraft on display is the MiG-21 jet number 5121, famously piloted by Hero Pham Tuan during the historic 'Dien Bien Phu in the Air' campaign, where he shot down a US B-52 bomber on the night of December 27, 1972. Visitors will also be able to view the cream-colored Renault Juvaquatre car, a silent witness to the 1968 Tet Offensive, which was used by commando Nguyen Tuan Mieng to transport revolutionary forces. Phase one of the museum, which includes the first-floor exhibition halls, the central square, and the Victory Tower, is scheduled to open to the public by late 2024, promising an immersive educational experience for domestic and international visitors alike.
