Severe Localized Hailstorm Hits Nghe An Mountains: Significant Damage Reported in Tuong Duong District Communities

Residents in the mountainous district of Tuong Duong, Nghe An, were caught off guard on the afternoon of March 28 as a violent localized hailstorm swept through several communes. The storm, which began around 5:00 PM, lasted for approximately 30 minutes, leaving a trail of damage to housing and agriculture. Communes such as Huu Khuong and Nhon Mai were among the hardest hit, with residents reporting unusually large hailstones that caused immediate concern.

In Huu Khuong commune, the impact was particularly severe. Chairman of the People's Committee, Lo Van Giap, noted that while hail is not unheard of in the region, the size of the stones in this particular storm was exceptionally rare. Many homes suffered damage to their roofs, and vast areas of crops and fruit trees were battered by the falling ice. Local officials are currently working to provide a full assessment of the economic loss, but early reports suggest that many families will face significant challenges in the coming weeks.

In Nhon Mai commune, Chairman Lu Ngoc Tinh reported that the storm also lasted about 30 minutes, though the hailstones there were slightly smaller and caused less structural damage. Nevertheless, the suddenness of the event left the community in a state of high alert. Following the storm, many locals were seen gathering the ice stones, some of which had clumped together into large frozen masses that took hours to melt even in the humid weather.

This weather event serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of mountainous communities to extreme climate phenomena. Local authorities are advising residents to remain vigilant and are coordinating efforts to help those whose livelihoods have been affected. As the cleanup begins, the focus remains on repairing damaged homes and supporting farmers who have lost their seasonal harvests to this unexpected natural disaster.
