Owning a megacar is a dream for many, but for Vietnamese businessman Hoang Kim Khanh, it recently involved a two-year logistical and financial odyssey. Khanh, a prominent figure in the Vietnamese supercar scene, recently shared the staggering costs associated with maintaining and repairing his Koenigsegg Regera. The repair bill alone reached $365,637 (approximately 8.9 billion VND), a figure that underscores the extreme commitment required to keep a limited-edition masterpiece in peak condition.

The Koenigsegg Regera is one of only 80 units produced worldwide. When it was first unveiled in 2015, it carried a price tag of roughly $1.9 million. Today, its market value has skyrocketed, with examples fetching between $4 million and $5 million at international auctions. Khanh's Regera, which features a unique carbon fiber finish, arrived in Vietnam in early 2022. However, its time on the road was cut short during a high-profile road trip in June 2022, when the vehicle suffered a major electrical failure on the Hanoi-Hai Phong highway. The issue was so severe that the car's doors reportedly locked, temporarily trapping the occupants inside, and the advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain refused to ignite.

Because of the car's complexity—featuring a 5.0L twin-turbo V8 paired with three electric motors—local technicians were unable to perform the necessary repairs. The vehicle had to be transported back to Cambodia, then to a specialized dealership in Thailand, and finally shipped across the globe to the Koenigsegg factory in Angelholm, Sweden. Shipping costs alone were reported at over 600 million VND. The two-year repair process highlights a significant challenge for supercar owners in Southeast Asia: the tropical climate. High humidity and extreme heat can wreak havoc on sensitive European electronics and cooling systems designed for temperate environments.

Hoang Kim Khanh is no stranger to high-end automotive maintenance. His collection includes other heavyweights like the Lamborghini Aventador S, Ferrari SF90 Stradale, and Ferrari 488 Pista Spider. While brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini now have official service centers in Vietnam, owners of 'Holy Trinity' level cars or boutique brands like Koenigsegg, Pagani, and Bugatti must often rely on international logistics for major service intervals. This story serves as a fascinating look into the world of ultra-luxury car ownership, where the purchase price is just the beginning of the investment. As the Regera finally returns to the region, enthusiasts are eager to see this 1,500-horsepower beast back on the streets, proving that for collectors like Khanh, no price is too high for the love of the machine.
