Investigation Into Suspected Smuggled Chinese Goods in Bac Ninh Market

Authorities in Bac Ninh province have launched a significant investigation into several retail outlets suspected of selling smuggled goods from China. The focus of the probe is centered on Ngoc Han Cong Chua Street, a bustling area in Bac Ninh City known for its high concentration of shops catering to international workers and locals. Specifically, three establishments have been identified: China Market at No. 29, Mei Yi Jia at No. 39, and Yi Jie Supermarket at No. 55. Reports indicate that thousands of products, ranging from daily necessities to high-end luxury items, were being sold without proper Vietnamese labeling or proof of legal importation.

One of the most concerning findings during the investigation was the presence of expensive liquors, including the prestigious Moutai (Mao Dai) wine, priced as high as 12 million VND per bottle. These items lacked the mandatory 'nhãn phụ' (supplementary labels) in Vietnamese, making it impossible for consumers to verify the origin, ingredients, or safety of the products. Furthermore, the shops were found to be selling various pharmaceutical products and medical supplies, such as cough syrups and antibiotics, entirely in Chinese. This poses a significant health risk to local consumers who may not understand the dosage or contraindications of these medicines.

Following a coordinated raid by the Market Management Department and the Economic Police, a business owner identified as Bui Thi Lien (operating at the location marked 55 Ngoc Han Cong Chua) was fined 30,000,000 VND. Additionally, authorities seized and ordered the destruction of smuggled food and alcohol valued at over 48 million VND. While one shop has been penalized, investigations into China Market and Mei Yi Jia are still ongoing. This case highlights the challenges faced by regulators in controlling the influx of unofficial goods and the importance of consumer vigilance. Shoppers are encouraged to look for products with clear Vietnamese labeling to ensure they are purchasing safe and legal items. The local government continues to monitor the 'thủ phủ' (hub) of Chinese goods in Bac Ninh to prevent further violations of trade laws.
