The classic Vietnamese fairy tale 'An Khe Tra Vang' (The Starfruit Tree / Eat Starfruit, Pay in Gold) is one of the most beloved and enduring stories in Vietnamese culture. The older brother, driven by greed, claims almost the entire inheritance, leaving his younger brother with nothing but a small plot of land containing a single starfruit tree. Despite his misfortune, the kind-hearted younger brother diligently cares for the tree. One day, a giant golden-feathered raven arrives to eat the starfruits. Feeling sorry for the younger brother, the raven promises to pay for the fruit in gold, instructing him to sew a bag of three spans (ba gang) to hold the treasure. The raven carries the younger brother to a mysterious island filled with gold, allowing him to collect just enough to live a comfortable, prosperous life.

Upon seeing his brother's sudden wealth, the greedy older brother insists on trading his entire estate for the starfruit tree. When the raven returns, the older brother sews a massive bag to maximize his loot. Overwhelmed by the heavy weight of the gold, the raven struggles to fly back and is forced to drop the greedy brother into the ocean. Today, 'An Khe Tra Vang' remains an essential story for teaching children about moral values, family bonds, and the timeless truth that greed leads to ruin.
