The Mystery of the 99,999 Bricks: The Legend of the Great Wall’s Jiayu Pass

The Great Wall of China, a monumental feat of engineering stretching over 21,196 km, is full of historical legends. Among its most impressive structures is the Jiayu Pass (Jiayuguan), located at the westernmost end of the wall. Often called the 'First and Greatest Pass Under Heaven', this Ming Dynasty construction served as both a crucial military defense point and a vital stop on the ancient Silk Road. A fascinating legend surrounds its construction, centered on a brilliant architect named Yi Kaiqian. Tasked with calculating the exact number of bricks needed, he predicted 99,999. The overseer, skeptical and harsh, threatened him with forced labor if he missed by even one brick. Upon completion, exactly one brick was left over. When the overseer attempted to punish the workers, the architect warned that the brick was a structural necessity; removing it would cause the wall to collapse. When the official discarded the brick, the wall did indeed tumble, forcing a rebuild. Today, the legendary 'extra' brick is said to still sit atop the wall, a symbol of the precision and mystery defining this ancient wonder.
