00In a surprising turn of events, gold prices in Vietnam saw a significant decline on the evening of February 18, just two days before the traditional God of Wealth Day (Thần Tài). Typically, gold prices surge during this period as millions of people flock to jewelry stores to buy gold for good luck. However, SJC gold prices dropped by approximately 200,000 VND per tael, with buying prices falling to 75.8 million VND and selling prices at 78.4 million VND. This unexpected dip has created a unique opportunity for early shoppers looking to secure their 'lucky gold' at a slightly lower cost.
Major jewelry chains like PNJ, DOJI, and SJC reported high foot traffic despite the price fluctuation. PNJ, in particular, noted that many customers preferred to shop on the weekend evening to avoid the massive crowds expected on the actual God of Wealth Day (the 10th day of the Lunar New Year). Popular items this year include small gold bars (0.5 to 1 tael) engraved with the words for 'Prosperity' (Phú), 'Wealth' (Quý), and 'Fortune' (Phát). Additionally, PNJ introduced a new 'mini' gold line called 'Tieu Loc Dai Phat,' which weighs only 0.3 grams, making it affordable for a wider range of consumers who want to participate in the tradition.
The decline in prices was not limited to SJC gold bars; 24K gold rings also saw a decrease, ending the day at around 64.7 million VND per tael. This is particularly noteworthy as gold rings had recently hit historic highs in Vietnam. Market analysts suggest that the price drop may be a temporary correction or a reflection of global market trends, but for the average consumer, it simply means a slightly more accessible entry point into a cherished cultural practice. As stores prepare to open as early as 6:30 AM on God of Wealth Day, the anticipation remains high, proving that the tradition of buying gold for luck is as strong as ever in Vietnam.
