The Luzon Bleeding-Heart Pigeon: A Rare Gem of the Philippines

The Luzon Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba luzonica) is one of the most striking and unusual bird species in the world. Endemic to the island of Luzon in the Philippines, this pigeon is named for the vivid red patch on its breast, which looks remarkably like a bleeding wound. This 'blood' is actually a cluster of red feathers that fade into a lighter pink as they extend down the belly. Despite its dramatic appearance, the Luzon Bleeding-heart is an incredibly shy and secretive bird. One of these, the Catanduanes bleeding-heart, is so rare that it is feared to be extinct, with the last specimen collected in 1971. Conservation efforts are crucial to ensure that this 'bleeding heart' continues to beat in the wild. Protecting the remaining tropical forests of Luzon and raising awareness about the bird's plight are essential steps in saving this unique piece of Philippine biodiversity.
