Deep within the heart of Phu Tho village, in the An Thuy commune of Quang Binh province, lies a breathtaking natural wonder: an ancient Loc Vung (Barringtonia acutangula) forest that has stood for over 400 years. Spanning approximately 2 hectares and home to nearly 1,000 trees, this forest is a rare ecological gem in Central Vietnam. Known locally as the 'Mung' tree, these majestic specimens have witnessed the birth and growth of the village, serving as silent guardians through centuries of history, war, and natural disasters.

The forest is not just a scenic landscape; it is a vital part of the community's survival. Situated along the banks of the Kien Giang River, the dense network of Loc Vung trees acts as a natural shield, protecting the village from the fierce waves and floods that characterize the rainy season. During the resistance wars, the forest provided essential cover and training grounds for soldiers. Today, it serves as the 'green lung' of the region, offering a serene escape and a sense of timelessness. Some of the oldest trees are so large that a single person cannot wrap their arms around the trunk, their gnarled bark and sprawling branches telling stories of resilience.

The people of Phu Tho village view this forest as a sacred treasure. To ensure its preservation, they have established strict community regulations known as 'hương ước.' Anyone found harming the trees faces severe penalties and public criticism. A dedicated forest protection group, consisting of veterans and local security, regularly patrols the area to prevent illegal logging or damage. Despite the high demand for Loc Vung trees in the ornamental plant market—with some traders offering billions of VND for unique specimens—the villagers and local authorities have steadfastly refused to sell. Twice a year, the forest transforms as the trees burst into bloom, carpeting the ground in vibrant red flowers, creating a scene of ethereal beauty that continues to inspire locals and visitors alike.
