The 'God of Wealth Day' (Ngày Vía Thần Tài), observed on the 10th day of the Lunar New Year, is traditionally one of the busiest days for gold shops in Vietnam. However, 2024 has seen a noticeable shift in consumer behavior. On Hanoi’s famous 'Gold Street,' Tran Nhan Tong, the usual scenes of hundreds of people queuing from 4 AM were absent this year. While major brands like Bao Tin Minh Chau and DOJI still opened their doors at 6 AM to welcome customers, the crowds were significantly thinner than in previous years. Industry experts suggest several reasons for this change, including a rise in online gold purchases and a trend of buying gold several days in advance to avoid the 'Thần Tài' price surge.

On the morning of the event, SJC gold prices were quoted at approximately 75-78 million VND per tael, showing a slight decrease compared to the previous day. Gold rings, a popular choice for those looking to 'buy luck' without a massive investment, were priced around 6.46-6.6 million VND per tael. Despite the lower physical turnout at dawn, major retailers expect the total volume of sales to remain high. Many businesses have adapted by offering 'pre-order' services starting from the 6th day of Tet, allowing customers to lock in prices and pick up their gold at their convenience. This modernization of a traditional practice reflects the changing economic landscape and the increasing digital literacy of Vietnamese consumers.

For many, buying gold on this day is a deeply spiritual act believed to bring prosperity and good fortune for the rest of the year. Customers like 73-year-old Mr. Le Van Tam, who arrived at 5:30 AM to buy two mace of gold rings, represent the traditionalists who still value the physical experience of the purchase. Meanwhile, younger investors are more focused on market fluctuations and the long-term value of gold as a safe-haven asset amidst global economic uncertainty. As the day progressed, foot traffic did increase, particularly during lunch hours when office workers were able to visit the shops. While the 'fever' of God of Wealth Day may have cooled in terms of physical queues, the cultural significance of gold as a symbol of wealth and security remains as strong as ever in Vietnamese society.
