On the morning of February 20, 2024, a significant meeting of the press was held, featuring key figures such as Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang. The gathering, organized by the Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Information and Communications, and the Vietnam Journalists Association, aimed to review the media's performance during the Lunar New Year (Giap Thin 2024). During the session, Deputy PM Tran Luu Quang emphasized the critical need for journalism to innovate and find new ways to make their products more attractive to the public. He acknowledged that while the press did an excellent job of conveying positive messages and celebrating national achievements during the Tet holiday, the challenges ahead are significant. With the rise of social media platforms and a decline in traditional advertising revenue, traditional media must adapt to survive and thrive. The Deputy PM highlighted the success of Vinh Long Radio and Television (THVL) as a prime example. Despite being a provincial station, THVL has successfully competed with national giants like VTV and HTV, earning over 1,400 billion VND in revenue in 2023, with a significant portion coming from YouTube (approximately 4 million USD). This success, he noted, is built on creating content that truly resonates with the audience. The meeting also addressed the importance of 'kind journalism'—media that creates and spreads positive, humane values within society. As Vietnam navigates a complex global economic landscape, the role of the press in providing accurate, engaging, and constructive information is more vital than ever. The Deputy PM's call for creativity and a 'new way of thinking' serves as a roadmap for the future of Vietnamese media in the digital age. Journalists are encouraged to stay close to the reality of life, reflecting the breath of society while maintaining professional integrity and bravery.
