Tao Quan 2024: A New Era Begins with Major Cast Overhaul for Vietnam's Iconic Tet Show

For over two decades, 'Tao Quan' (The Kitchen Gods) has been an indispensable spiritual dish for Vietnamese families during the Lunar New Year (Tet). However, the 2024 edition of the show, titled 'Gap Nhau Cuoi Nam,' marks one of the most significant shifts in its history. Following the filming sessions on January 27th, 28th, and 29th, it was revealed that almost the entire veteran cast has been replaced. Familiar faces like Xuan Bac, Tu Long, Chi Trung, Quang Thắng, and Van Dung—who have defined these roles for 20 years—are not participating this year, paving the way for a fresh generation of performers.

The new lineup features talented artists who are stepping into the satirical world of the Heavens. The new 'Gods' include Quan Anh as the Social God (Tao Xa Hoi), Quoc Quan as the Economic God (Tao Kinh Te), Tu Oanh as the Culture and Sports God (Tao Van The), and Ba Anh as the Traffic God (Tao Giao Thong). While the change has sparked intense debate among loyal fans, the production team at VFC emphasizes that this is a necessary step to bring a breakthrough to the program. The goal is to modernize the format while maintaining the sharp, satirical edge that makes Tao Quan a cultural powerhouse.

Despite the massive cast changes, one constant remains: the legendary artist Quoc Khanh will return as the Jade Emperor (Ngoc Hoang). However, even his role has been refreshed. In the 2024 script, the Jade Emperor no longer simply sits on his throne waiting for the Gods to report; instead, he takes a 'field trip' to the mortal world in the opening segment to see the realities of life firsthand. This narrative shift allows the show to address current social, economic, and educational issues from a more grounded perspective. The production continues to be led by veteran directors Do Thanh Hai and Khai Anh, ensuring that the show's core identity remains intact.

Tao Quan 2024 will also feature new musical segments, parading hit songs with satirical lyrics—a signature element of the show. While the absence of the 'old guard' might be jarring for viewers in the first few minutes, the crew is hopeful that the audience will embrace the new energy. As usual, the show is scheduled to air at 8:00 PM on New Year's Eve (February 9th). It remains a vital platform for reflecting on the past year’s highlights and challenges through the lens of comedy and music, continuing its legacy as a Tet tradition.
