Hanoi’s Post-Tet Floral Trend: The Timeless Beauty of White Pear Blossoms

As the vibrant pink of cherry blossoms fades after the Lunar New Year, a new color takes over the streets of Hanoi: the pure, snow-white hue of pear blossoms (Hoa Lê). In recent days, Lạc Long Quân Street, which runs along the scenic West Lake, has become a bustling hub for flower enthusiasts. These delicate blooms, brought down from the northern mountainous provinces like Lai Châu, Lào Cai, and Lạng Sơn, offer a refreshing aesthetic that captures the wild spirit of the highlands.

Hanoians are increasingly drawn to pear blossoms because of their longevity. Unlike many other spring flowers, a branch of pear blossoms can stay fresh for one to two months if cared for properly. Buyers typically look for branches with plenty of buds, hoping they will reach full bloom in time for the First Full Moon Festival (Rằm tháng Giêng). The pricing for these flowers varies greatly; while small branches can be found for 100,000 to 500,000 VND, large, ancient-looking stumps with intricate shapes and numerous buds can fetch prices upwards of ten million VND.

Despite the high cost, many residents are willing to spend generously to bring a piece of the mountains into their homes. The sight of white blossoms against dark, mossy bark creates a sophisticated look that complements both modern and traditional interiors. Merchants along Lạc Long Quân Street have even set up temporary tents to live on-site, ensuring they can tend to the delicate branches and assist customers with securing the flowers for transport. This seasonal floral trend not only beautifies the capital but also provides a vital source of income for traders and farmers from the northern border regions, bridging the gap between the rural highlands and urban Hanoi.
