If you find yourself exploring the vibrant streets of Ho Chi Minh City during the Lunar New Year, there is one unique cultural landmark you should not miss: the century-old 'Wishing Tree' (Cây ước nguyện). Standing proud at approximately 20 meters tall, this majestic banyan tree has become a central attraction for locals and international tourists seeking blessings, health, and prosperity at the start of the year.

Dating back over a hundred years, this impressive tree features a sprawling canopy that shades an area of about 600 square meters. Since 1995, when the surrounding tourist park was developed, the banyan tree has served as a sanctuary for hopes and dreams. Thousands of visitors flock here annually, especially during the Tet holiday, to participate in a beautiful, time-honored tradition.

The ritual is simple yet deeply meaningful. For a small fee of just 10,000 VND, visitors can purchase a vibrant red or pink fabric ribbon. After writing their heartfelt wishes for the new year—whether it is wishing for family health, academic success, or finding a life partner—they tie the ribbons onto the tree's branches. Over time, the tree has become adorned with a breathtaking sea of red and pink notes. To accommodate new visitors, the park management occasionally relocates older ribbons higher up into the branches, creating a stunning vertical tapestry of human desires.

During the Tet Giap Thin (Year of the Dragon) celebrations, the Wishing Tree transforms into one of the most photogenic spots in Ho Chi Minh City. Young locals dressed in elegant, colorful traditional Ao Dai visit the site to capture stunning photos against the vivid backdrop of fluttering ribbons. The atmosphere is filled with joy, hope, and the fragrant scent of incense.

Adding to the spiritual experience, a small altar dedicated to Ong Dia (the Earth God) and Than Tai (the God of Wealth) is nestled at the base of the tree. Here, visitors can offer prayers and pay their respects, seeking financial luck and stability for the upcoming year. Beyond its spiritual allure, the massive tree provides a cool, refreshing resting spot where travelers can escape the tropical heat, enjoy local snacks, and absorb the peaceful ambiance.

For travelers looking to experience authentic Vietnamese customs and immerse themselves in local folklore, the century-old Wishing Tree in Ho Chi Minh City is a highly recommended stop on any travel itinerary.
